PONCE, Puerto Rico.- Puerto Rican Olympic jumper Luis Joel Castro will fulfill his dream of competing in a world-class event in Puerto Rico.

Castro, who is the first Puerto Rican to compete in the high jump final in an Olympic Games by qualifying in Rio 2016, is "nervous and happy" for his debut in the Puerto Rico International Athletics Classic on May 12, at the Francisco "Paquito" Montaner Stadium in Ponce.

“Since I was young, it was always my dream to compete in the Ponce Grand Prix because of the quality of the athletes who compete. And now, being in the Clásico (International Athletics), is a very big opportunity in my career. It is a dream come true since, when I stood out in my event, the Grand Prix was no longer being held”, confessed Castro.

The lanky athlete will also make his return to Montaner after ending his participation in the Interuniversity Athletic League (LAI) several years ago defending the colors of the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus (UPR).

"It fills me with great emotion to compete again in the "Paquito" Montaner Stadium because the Justas are held there, and it brings back many memories," Castro said. “I am very excited, happy and a little nervous, because I haven't competed in an event of this international caliber in Puerto Rico for a long time,” he added.

“The last time I competed at the Ponce I broke the Justas mark with 2.20 (meters) and it was 2.18. On that occasion I won gold for the third time”, recalled the Carolinian, who was last March in the Spring Athletics Classic in his hometown with a jump of 2.20.

Castro will arrive in Ponce with the goal of reaching the 2.33 meter mark to qualify for the World Athletics Championships this summer in Oregon, United States.

“That is the main objective, to make the mark to go to the World Cup in Oregon. I am happy because my event will take place in Ponce, which was not on the program at the beginning, and since it is a silver category in World Athletics, it will give me good points. I am 33rd in the points ranking and this event will give me good points to qualify”, assured the jumper.

The Puerto Rico International Athletics Classic is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour – Silver Level, and is dedicated to the Olympian Javier Culson from Ponce.

Tickets are on sale now and are $30 for box seats and $20 for general admission. Both prices include the IVU and service charges. The box area that will be sold for this athletics event will be sections 20 to 40 on the 100 meter straight. Buy tickets here:
