PONCE, Puerto Rico.- The Olympic 800-meter athlete Ryan Sánchez will have a great advantage over his rivals in the Puerto Rico International Athletics Classic, and he will make the most of it.

The 23-year-old athlete will have the opportunity to see - first of all - the new track that was installed at the Francisco "Paquito" Montaner Stadium in Ponce for the international event, which will take place on the 12th of may.

Sánchez will run this weekend on the new surface when he goes out to defend -for the last time- the colors of the Ana G. Méndez University, in the Fairs of the Interuniversity Athletic League (LAI).

“Running in the Fairs will help me a lot for the Clásico because I can test the terrain; try that surface that is new and feel more comfortable for when that May 12th arrives, be ready, ”said Sánchez.

The athlete will face the bronze medalist in Rio 2016, the American Clayton Murphy, in the 800 meters. There will also be Shane Streich, from the United States. Streich set the American record in the 1,000 meters on February 12, 2022, in Kentucky with 2:16.16.

"I want to have a good representation at home and before my people, that is the priority," said Sánchez. "And look for the mark for this year's World Cup in Oregon of 1:45.20 (minutes)", he indicated.

“I know it will be a tough race because quality athletes are coming, but if the race gets tougher it might be possible to make a personal best; because the minimum is not so far from my personal best”, explained Sánchez, who has 1:44.82 as his best time.

The national mark of the 800 meters is Wesley Vázquez of 1:43.83. Vázquez is recovering from an injury and will not compete in Ponce, like another specialist in this distance, the Puerto Rican Andrés Arroyo.

“Breaking the 1:45 barrier and going in at 1:44 would be great after two races in California and Iowa. Both races were in super cold temperatures, especially the last one, and they weren't convenient, but they gave me good marks for the ranking”, said the young runner. “And since the Clásico is endorsed by World Athletics, it will also give good points and together with the last two, I must be among the top 30”, concluded Sánchez, who last March won the 600 meters in the Carolina Spring Clásico when timing 1:13.99, and became the seventh athlete in history to complete the distance in less than 1:14.00.

The final of the 800 meters is scheduled for 7:11 p.m. in the program that will air live on ESPN2 from 6:00 p.m. Events will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the men's high jump.

The Puerto Rico International Athletics Classic is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour – Silver Level, and is dedicated to Olympian Javier Culson.
