Irizarry Pabón and López toured the new track that will host the first edition of the Puerto Rico International Athletics Classic, on Thursday, May 12, 2022, starting at 6:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

“The installation of the track has already been completed and tomorrow (Tuesday) the painting will begin because all the marking has already been done. The works are expected to finish between Saturday and Sunday. After being painted, the track will be ready to circulate”, expressed López with great enthusiasm after concluding the inspection together with the mayor of Ponce.

“They have done a tremendous job. And going back to “Paquito” Montaner and seeing the new song, not just me, all of us who were here today felt euphoric. We all agreed that the track was needed in Ponce, and now we will have a certified track to hold international events”, highlighted the director of the competition.

The Puerto Rico International Athletics Classic is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour – Silver Level, organized by the Puerto Rican Foundation for the Development of Athletics Sports (FUPPDA), owner of the franchise for this competition. Since its founding in 2006, FUPPDA has brought international athletics activities to the Island. On this occasion, it partnered with the American Track League (ATL) for the event presented by Puerto Rico Events.

“We evaluated the completion of the stadium track. The works, which have been done on the track for about a month, we have been observing as the Italians were setting up the track piece by piece; and we see the achievement of the track already completed”, said the mayor of Ponce.

“Some lane painting details are missing, which will be done starting tomorrow; and in the stadium all the things that would be missing from paint, plumbing and other things, which should already be there by April 29 in their final achievement. In other words, so far everything is going well and we hope it will be a success; not only the LAI Interuniversity Fairs, but also the International Athletics Classic”, concluded Irizarry Pabón.

The competition will be dedicated to the bronze medalist in the 400 meter hurdles at the London 2012 Olympic Games and twice world runner-up (Berlin 2009 and Daegu 2011), Javier Culson from Ponce.

Among the athletes who have confirmed their participation in the event is the Puerto Rican Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, Olympic champion of the 100 meter hurdles in Tokyo 2021; the American Ryan Crouser, Olympic champion (Tokyo 2021) and holds the world record for the shot put; Steve Gardiner, from the Bahamas, Olympic champion in the 400 meters (Tokyo 2021); and two-time Olympic gold medalist (London 2012 and Rio 2016) and four-time triple jump world champion Christian Taylor Sweet (USA).

Also from Puerto Rico will be Olympians Wesley Vázquez (800m), Ryan Sánchez (800m), and Andrés Arroyo (800m).
